Snapchat introduces real-time music sharing via Snap Map and Spotify integration
The social media platform’s latest update positions it to compete with TikTok and Instagram in the social music discovery space, leveraging Snap Map’s 450 million monthly active users.

Snapchat has launched a new feature titled “Now Playing,” enabling users to share their real-time music listening activity through Snap Map. The update, which initially integrates with Spotify, allows users to link their streaming accounts to display current tracks to friends. The feature also extends to Spotlight, Snapchat’s short-form video platform, permitting users to save songs discovered in videos directly to their Spotify libraries.
The rollout is designed to enhance social music discovery within Snap Map, a location-sharing tool launched in 2017 that now hosts over 450 million monthly active users. While Snap Map originally focused on location visibility and public Snaps, it has expanded to include local hotspots and activities. The addition of music sharing aims to further deepen user engagement by allowing individuals to share the soundtrack of their day with their social circle.
Privacy controls are a central component of the new feature. Users can manage visibility settings to pause sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely. The system is also programmed to automatically pause sharing after 24 hours of inactivity, resuming only when the app is opened again. Snapchat has confirmed that the feature will not display a user’s last-played song or full listening history, focusing strictly on real-time activity.
The launch places Snapchat in direct competition with rivals such as TikTok and Instagram, which have previously introduced features for music discovery and status updates. Spotify has also entered this space with its own real-time social listening tools. Manny Adler, Snapchat’s head of music, stated in an emailed communication that the feature is intended to make music sharing more meaningful by connecting friends through shared listening experiences.
The feature is currently available in regions where both Spotify and Snapchat operate. A release for Canada is scheduled for a future date, though specific timing has not been confirmed. The integration represents a strategic move to capitalise on the growing trend of social music discovery, leveraging Snapchat’s existing user base to drive engagement with streaming services.
