Alex Smalley has taken a two-shot lead into the final round of the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, establishing a singular target for a field that has remained remarkably tight throughout the week. Smalley finished the third round at six under par, securing the first outright lead of the tournament after birdieing four of his last six holes. His recovery came after a difficult start that saw him sit three over par through the first four holes, a deficit he overcame as wind conditions eased on the back nine.

The leaderboard at Aronimink has defied recent trends in major championship golf, with 21 players sitting within four shots of the lead. This highly congested field includes eight major champions, creating a scenario that players and pundits have described as an "absolute free-for-all." The PGA of America’s setup, characterised by challenging pin placements and persistent wind, has prevented separation among the elite, resulting in one of the tightest leaderboards in the event's history.

Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele are positioned three shots behind Smalley at three under par, having both shot a 4-under 66 on Saturday. McIlroy’s campaign has seen a significant turnaround after opening with a four-over 74 that placed him outside the top 100. He grabbed the clubhouse lead at 3 under before the wind picked up again, while Schauffele, who also posted a 66, noted the density of the leaderboard as a result of the tricky conditions.

Ludvig Åberg sits two shots off the lead at four under par, while Jon Rahm is also two shots back after reaching 5 under before bogeys set him back. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler is five shots behind at one under par, having struggled with putting earlier in the round but saving bogey on the 18th hole to remain in contention. The movement on Saturday was widespread, with sixteen players holding at least a share of the lead at some point during the day.

Conditions played a pivotal role in the day’s outcomes, with five players shooting a 5-under 65, all of whom teed off before 12:30 p.m. when the wind was more benign. As the afternoon progressed and the wind intensified, players found it increasingly difficult to hit fairways and greens, leading to a scramble for pars that kept the field clustered. Smalley’s ability to navigate the changing conditions on the back nine allowed him to break away from the pack and set the stage for an unpredictable final round.
