Myers will also oversee the franchise's basketball department in the interim, a role that sees him acting as a four-time championship architect of the Golden State Warriors. Head coach Nick Nurse will remain in his position for a fourth season despite the change at the executive level. Nurse's record stands at 116–130 over three seasons, a figure heavily impacted by a 24–58 record last year. However, his ability to navigate adversity was highlighted this season when he led the Sixers to a first-round victory over the Boston Celtics after overcoming a 3–1 series deficit.
The departure of Morey comes amidst questions regarding the cohesion and financial commitments of the team's core. Over the last two seasons, the trio of Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid have played only 43 games together, posting a 21–22 record.
