Embattled hedge fund Situational Awareness invests $400M in chip startup Source Foundry
Hedge fund’s total stake in the Stanford-founded semiconductor venture reaches $500 million

Situational Awareness, the artificial intelligence-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has invested a further $400 million in chip startup Source Foundry. This latest injection brings the fund’s total equity stake in the company to $500 million, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Source Foundry was established by Stanford researchers with the objective of accelerating chip manufacturing processes and reducing associated costs. The investment underscores the fund’s continued commitment to hardware infrastructure, despite significant turbulence in its broader portfolio.

The deployment of capital comes shortly after the fund sold the majority of its public portfolio to Ken Griffin’s Citadel at the end of July. While the bulk of public holdings were divested, Situational Awareness retained its shares in Anthropic. This strategic shift coincides with a reported contraction in the firm’s assets under management, which have fallen from $20 billion to $10 billion.

Aschenbrenner, who launched Situational Awareness in 2024, faced steep losses in recent months driven by the decline in AI infrastructure stocks. The fund had initially posted strong returns, but the subsequent downturn in the sector has prompted the restructuring of its public-facing positions.

Despite the financial headwinds and the reduction in managed assets, the fund remains active in the private markets. The latest investment in Source Foundry highlights a continued focus on long-term technological development, even as Aschenbrenner navigates both professional setbacks and personal milestones, including his recent marriage.
