Softball program claims 14th championship with dominant 4-0 victory over Southeast of Saline

Silver Lake softball concluded its season with a decisive 4-0 victory over Southeast of Saline to claim the Class 3A State Championship in Lawrence on Saturday, May 30. The win marks the school’s 14th state championship in any sport and the first for the program since 2018, ending a six-year title drought for the Eagles.

Head coach Nick Hamilton, who has guided the team to the state title game four times since 2019, secured his first championship after previous appearances resulted in runner-up finishes. Hamilton attributed the victory to the squad’s adherence to their development framework, noting that the players maintained trust in the coaching staff despite the pressure of multiple close calls in prior title games.

Starting pitcher Riley Mohler anchored the victory with a complete game performance, retiring the final eight batters to seal the shutout. Mohler, who described her performance as being "really on it" once the postseason began, highlighted the team’s defensive cohesion as a critical factor. She noted that the squad’s ability to function as a unified unit was evident throughout the championship match.

Silver Lake’s offence broke the deadlock in the top of the third inning. After Kailyn Hanni, Saylor Liggatt, and Taylor Swygert reached base via walks, Paige Heiman drew a six-pitch walk to load the bases, allowing a run to score. The Eagles carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, where Audrey Kirk added an RBI single that scored Mohler to extend the advantage to 2-0.

The Eagles doubled their lead later in the game through back-to-back wild pitches. The victory fulfils a singular organisational goal for the season, with Hamilton stating that the team felt good to finally finish their campaign at the top of the standings. The result stands as a testament to the program’s resilience and long-term strategic planning under Hamilton’s leadership.
