Shokz says its clip-on OpenDots 2 earbuds focus on improved volume and bass
Flagship model targets premium segment with enhanced acoustic tech and Dolby Audio support

Shokz has released two new clip-on earbuds, the flagship OpenDots 2 and the mid-range OpenDots Air, expanding its open-ear audio portfolio. The launch positions the OpenDots Air as an entry-level option priced significantly lower than the previous generation's launch price, while the OpenDots 2 targets the premium segment with enhanced acoustic technology. Both models utilise Bluetooth 6.1 and support multipoint connectivity, aiming to improve bass response, call clarity, and user customisation through the Shokz mobile app.

The OpenDots 2 introduces a new driver design with dual 11.8mm drivers arranged in a spherical configuration, which Shokz claims matches the output of a single 16mm driver. A redesigned diaphragm in the flagship model is said to reduce distortion by 70 percent. Shokz has implemented MirrorPitch technology, which angles sound to reflect toward the ear rather than projecting outward, aiming to boost bass response and volume. The device also features upgraded Dolby Audio support and improved noise reduction for calls, specifically claiming clarity in wind conditions up to 12 mph.

Priced at $200, the OpenDots 2 offers up to 10 hours of battery life per charge, extending to 40 hours with the charging case. The case supports Qi wireless charging and includes a five-minute quick charge feature that delivers two hours of playback. The earbuds are rated IP57 for water and dust resistance and are available in black, gray, and pearl white. Users can control the devices by tapping the arc between the two sections or pinching the back portion, with a force sensor designed to minimize accidental touches.

The OpenDots Air is priced at $130, utilising the previous generation Bassphere 1.0 technology. It weighs 6.3g per earbud, compared to 6.4g for the OpenDots 2, and offers up to nine hours of playback per charge, with a total of 36 hours available with the case. The Air model lacks wireless charging capabilities and requires a 10-minute quick charge for two hours of playback. It is available in black and daybreak purple.

Both models support multipoint connectivity for simultaneous connection to two devices. Users can customise equalisation settings via the Shokz mobile app, with presets including a voice-boosting mode for podcasts and audiobooks, as well as a privacy mode that attenuates higher frequencies in quiet environments. The OpenDots Air also features dynamic ear detection, removing the need for manual pairing adjustments. Both models are available for order from Amazon, Best Buy, and Shokz's website.
