Stellar Blade's slick-looking sequel is officially called Blood Rain
Developer pivots to self-publishing for Blood Rain, marking a strategic departure from its previous deal with Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Developer Shift Up has officially announced the sequel to its breakout hit, Stellar Blade, during Summer Games Fest 2026. Revealed at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on June 5, the title is confirmed as Stellar Blade: Blood Rain. The studio stated that the sequel will remain set in the same universe as the original but intends to take the franchise in a "bold new direction."

The announcement included a lengthy trailer showcasing the game’s visual style and combat mechanics. The narrative will centre on a new protagonist named Evie, described as a clear homage to Eve, the lead character from the first game. The trailer highlighted shiny cutscenes and flashy combat sequences, with enemy designs shifting toward a body-horror theme. These foes feature gory transformations from human to monster, a distinct departure from the Souls-inspired adversaries found in the original title.

A significant structural change accompanies the sequel’s announcement. Shift Up confirmed it will self-publish Blood Rain, ending its previous publishing partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. This move marks a departure from the strategy used for the original Stellar Blade, which was published by Sony and carried a PlayStation exclusivity window before launching on PC.

The original Stellar Blade was generally well-received by critics, holding an 81 score on Metacritic for its stylish visuals and combat systems. The shift to self-publishing follows feedback from players regarding the exclusivity window of the first game. It also occurs amid reports that Sony is placing a renewed focus on exclusives, with plans to withhold certain titles from PC platforms.

While the sequel’s visual identity and publishing model have been clarified, specific details regarding the release date and confirmed platforms remain unconfirmed. The studio has not yet disclosed whether Blood Rain will follow the multi-platform trajectory suggested by its self-publishing status or adhere to traditional console-first strategies.
