Shami recalls nervous debut in Indian cricket dressing room

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has provided insight into his initial experiences within the national team dressing room, describing a period of significant nervousness upon joining the squad. In an interview reported by Yahoo Sports, Shami recounted the pressure of his first team meeting, where he was confronted by a group of players he had admired since childhood.
Shami, who made his One Day International debut against Pakistan in Delhi on 6 January 2013, described the atmosphere of his first gathering as daunting. He recalled sitting quietly upon entering the room, overwhelmed by the presence of stars he had "not one name that had not come in my dream." The tension peaked when former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh instructed him to stand on a chair to address the group.
According to Shami, the sudden request caused him to forget his prepared remarks. "I had forgotten everything after seeing all the names," he stated. Unable to articulate more than a basic introduction, he could only provide his name and hometown to the assembled squad, a moment he described as a stark contrast to his later status as one of India’s leading fast bowlers.
Beyond the initial intimidation, Shami highlighted the role of former opener Shikhar Dhawan in fostering team spirit. He identified Dhawan as the team’s funniest player, noting his ability to lift the mood even after match defeats. Shami observed that Dhawan would often laugh loudly at the loss and dance to Punjabi music while standing on tables, creating a lighter atmosphere amidst the pressures of international cricket.
Dhawan, who retired from international and domestic cricket in 2024 after playing 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, was instrumental in maintaining camaraderie during Shami’s early years. Shami’s debut timeline included a Test match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in November 2013 and a T20I against Pakistan in Mirpur in March 2014, periods during which he witnessed these team dynamics firsthand.
