RGG Studio blends narrative depth with traditional combat in new entry set in Southeast Asia

Sega has announced Virtua Fighter Crossroads, a new cinematic narrative fighting game developed by RGG Studio, with a scheduled release in 2027. The title represents a significant departure from traditional entries in the franchise, aiming to bridge the gap between dedicated fighting game mechanics and the story-driven experiences that have defined the studio’s work on the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series.

Set in the fictional Southeast Asian city of Vilasapara, the game centres on four new protagonists, each embodying distinct thematic elements that influence gameplay style and narrative tone. One character, Cielo, is portrayed as a young fighter starting from humble beginnings, while another teased element involves a film noir-themed protagonist. This approach marks a tonal shift from the often chaotic shenanigans found in previous RGG Studio titles, with the team aiming for a more grounded and serious atmosphere.

The gameplay structure integrates a traditional one-on-one fighting system alongside a story mode where player decisions and relationships shape the unfolding narrative. While not a fully open sandbox world, the experience includes activities such as running a restaurant. The camera perspective shifts from a behind-the-shoulder view during exploration to a side-on view during combat, allowing players to test their skills against multiple opponents.

RGG Studio producer Riichiro Yamada highlighted several mechanical updates designed to address the series' notoriously steep learning curve. New systems include damage accumulation, where sustained hits to specific body parts affect a fighter for the duration of a match, and an increased emphasis on stun attacks, which may reduce the reliance on lengthy combos. Despite these complexities, the core controls remain simple, consisting of punch, kick, and defend buttons.

Returning characters from the Virtua Fighter series will appear within the narrative, including Pai Chan, who is seen interacting with Cielo in recent trailers. Yamada stated that the single-player experience is designed to teach players the fundamentals of Virtua Fighter, potentially broadening the series' appeal beyond its devoted niche fanbase. The title joins other major software announcements from Sega, including the upcoming Stranger Than Heaven, also being developed at RGG Studio.
