Sega cancels its 'Super Game' plan
The Tokyo-based publisher confirms the cancellation in its 2026 fiscal results, citing underperformance in free-to-play titles and financial headwinds with partner Rovio.

Sega has officially terminated its enigmatic "Super Game" initiative five years after its initial announcement, a decision confirmed within the company's 2026 fiscal year financial results. The cancellation marks the end of a project that was notoriously vague in its scope, originally described in 2023 as a title intended to stand "head and shoulder above normal games."

The publisher attributes the demise of the project to the weak performance of its free-to-play and "games-as-a-service" portfolio, specifically citing the underwhelming reception of *Sonic Rumble Party*. Compounding these operational challenges were reported financial struggles associated with Sega's partnership with *Angry Birds* developer Rovio, factors that collectively undermined the viability of the flagship concept.

Originally conceived as a massive global title leveraging Microsoft's Azure cloud infrastructure, the "Super Game" plan involved an estimated investment of $880 million with a target release date of March 2026. Despite the ambitious budget and cloud-based development architecture, the project remains shrouded in ambiguity regarding its final scope, leading management to scrap the initiative entirely.

In response to this strategic shift, Sega is redirecting over 100 staff members who were previously allocated to free-to-play development toward new priorities. The company is focusing its resources on reboots of classic intellectual properties, including *Virtua Fighter*, *Golden Axe*, *Streets of Rage*, and *Crazy Taxi*, which are currently in progress.

This pivot also sees the publisher capitalising on its film division, which has recently emerged as a financial bright spot. Upcoming cinematic projects include *Sonic the Hedgehog 4*, *The Angry Birds Movie 3*, and adaptations of titles such as *OutRun*, *Shinobi*, and *Streets of Rage*.
