Security Protocols and Political Fracture Define Historic NBA Finals Appearance
Heavy security measures and a divided crowd marked the first sitting US president’s attendance at the NBA Finals, coinciding with the New York Knicks’ 115-111 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs.

The New York Knicks’ 46-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Monday night as they lost Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals to the San Antonio Spurs, 115-111. The defeat halted the team’s 13-game postseason winning streak and ended their bid for a 3-0 series lead. The match, held at Madison Square Garden, was the first NBA Finals game at the venue since 1999.
The game drew significant attention due to the presence of Donald Trump, the 45th and 47th US president, who attended from the owner’s box. This marks the first time a sitting US president has attended an NBA Finals game. Trump was seated in the box belonging to Knicks owner James Dolan.
During the national anthem, Trump was shown on video screens giving a military salute. Sections of the crowd booed loudly at the president, a reaction described by a White House press pool report as “thunderous.” The atmosphere inside the arena was mixed, with cheers erupting for the US flag and Knicks players, contrasting with the dissent directed at the president.
Security measures were extensive and tightly controlled. The NYPD closed streets between West 30th and West 35th from Sixth to Eighth Avenue. Fans were required to undergo “TSA-style” screening and adhere to a strict no-bag policy. A security fence was erected outside the venue, and a scheduled outdoor watch party was cancelled.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the security protocols would remain in place regardless of the president’s departure. The heightened security comes amid broader scrutiny of presidential security protocols following a recent probe into a shooting suspect at a US press gala.
