SEC dominance tested as 2026 College World Series commences in Omaha
Georgia leads top seeds as Troy emerges as sole mid-major contender in field dominated by Southeastern Conference representatives.

The 2026 NCAA College World Series has officially commenced at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, marking the final stage of the national championship race. Eight teams have advanced to compete for the sport’s ultimate prize, with the Southeastern Conference (SEC) maintaining a stranglehold on the field. Five of the participating teams hail from the SEC, which is currently targeting its seventh consecutive national title following a postseason run that saw the conference emerge relatively unscathed from the regional and super regional rounds.
Georgia enters the tournament as the top remaining seed in the bracket, positioned as the primary contender for the championship. The Bulldogs are joined by a formidable group of unbeaten teams in tournament play, including No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Alabama, and Ole Miss. These programs, along with Georgia, represent the elite tier of the competition, facing a challenging path against other top-16 national seeds that have also punched their tickets to Omaha.
In a notable deviation from the conference-heavy narrative, Troy advanced as the sole No. 3 seed in its bracket. The Trojans achieved this milestone by securing victories in the Gainesville Regional and their home super regional, marking the furthest they have advanced in the postseason. While positioned as heavy underdogs to progress further in the double-elimination format, Troy’s presence highlights the potential for mid-major programmes to disrupt the established hierarchy, following a precedent set by previous non-power conference successes.
The tournament features high-profile individual talents driving their respective teams’ strategies. Georgia’s lineup, described as the hardest-hitting in the nation, is anchored by Golden Spikes Award favourite Daniel Jackson. Texas relies on a pitching staff spearheaded by Dylan Volantis, while Alabama’s offensive threat is significantly amplified by the base-running impact of Justin Lebron. These key players are expected to be central to the outcomes of the opening matchups at Charles Schwab Field.
The opening round schedule features four critical games broadcast on ESPN. Troy faces No. 16 West Virginia at 2 p.m., while Ole Miss takes on No. 5 North Carolina at 7 p.m. Later in the day, No. 7 Alabama plays No. 7 Oklahoma at 3 p.m., and the marquee matchup sees No. 3 Georgia face No. 6 Texas at 8 p.m. The double-elimination bracket structure dictates a complex series of subsequent games, with the CWS Finals scheduled for broadcast on ESPN and ABC, culminating in the determination of the 2026 national champion.
