Devon Witherspoon contract: Seahawks star becomes NFL's highest-paid CB, raises bar for Christian Gonzalez
Defensive infrastructure overhaul signals strategic pivot for Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks have restructured their defensive compensation framework, agreeing to a four-year, $132 million contract extension with cornerback Devon Witherspoon. According to CBS Sports, the agreement includes $101 million in guaranteed funds and establishes an average annual value of $33 million, effectively making Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in National Football League history.

The financial terms surpass the previous benchmark set by Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward, whose deal averaged $31.1 million annually. Witherspoon’s extension, which is structured to take effect in the 2028 season, follows a Super Bowl victory where the Seahawks’ defence, led by Mike Macdonald, recorded the NFL’s top scoring defence last season.

This signing places immediate pressure on the New England Patriots regarding the contract status of cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Patriots owner Robert Kraft previously stated that the team had extended an offer to Gonzalez that would make him the highest-paid player in franchise history. However, Witherspoon’s new market rate forces the Patriots to reassess the valuation required to retain their defensive asset.

Gonzalez’s situation has been complicated by recent injury concerns and public commentary. The Boston Sports Journal reported that Gonzalez sustained a minor injury during practice, sidelining him from recent sessions. Additionally, Gonzalez posted a social media story featuring lyrics referencing delays, which has been interpreted by observers as a response to the protracted negotiations.

The Witherspoon agreement is part of a broader retention strategy by the Seahawks, who have prioritised key contributors over allowing other players to depart in free agency. The organisation recently secured wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to a four-year, $168.6 million extension and re-signed cornerback Josh Jobe to a three-year, $24 million deal, signalling a commitment to maintaining the core of their championship-calibre roster.
