Schumacher: Antonelli poised to succeed Verstappen after Canadian GP dominance
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli extends championship lead to 43 points as Ralf Schumacher praises maturity over teammate George Russell’s struggles.

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has suggested that Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli is positioned to become the successor to Max Verstappen, following a commanding performance at the Canadian Grand Prix. Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, Schumacher highlighted the 19-year-old’s ability to manage intense pressure, contrasting his calm demeanor with the errors made by teammate George Russell during a fierce intra-team duel.
Antonelli secured his fourth consecutive Grand Prix victory in Montreal, a result that has extended his lead in the drivers' championship to 43 points over Russell. The race featured a tense battle between the two Mercedes drivers, who repeatedly traded the lead until Russell was forced to retire on lap 30 due to a power unit failure. Schumacher described the encounter as an "epic duel," noting that while Russell was initially the faster man, he struggled to maintain control under the strain.
Schumacher praised Antonelli’s maturity in handling the situation, stating that the young driver kept the scenario under control and learned from his own mistakes. "Kimi handles it incredibly calmly and maturely," Schumacher said. He argued that if this level of performance continues, the Italian driver could indeed become the next dominant force in the sport, effectively replacing Verstappen as the benchmark for future champions.
Addressing Antonelli’s development trajectory, Schumacher acknowledged that the driver had faced initial challenges, including Mercedes’ previous development issues regarding the rear axle. However, he noted that Antonelli gained momentum on newer tracks and has now taken the next step by refusing to give Russell any room to breathe. Schumacher observed that Antonelli is constantly putting pressure on his teammate, a dynamic that Russell appears to struggle with.
The former driver concluded that while Russell is super fast, he may not deal with pressure as effectively as his younger teammate. This assessment comes as Antonelli consolidates his position at the top of the standings, demonstrating the rapid adaptation and strategic discipline that Schumacher believes are essential for long-term success in Formula 1.
