SCHSL Announces Upper State Girls Track and Field Qualifiers for Columbia Championships
The South Carolina High School League has released the roster of athletes advancing to the state championships, with top performers emerging from Dorman, Spartanburg, and Mauldin in events ranging from sprints to field competitions.
The South Carolina High School League has officially announced the individual champions and qualifiers for the Upper State high school girls track and field team. These athletes will compete at the state championships scheduled to take place from May 14 to 16 in Columbia. The qualification process involved a series of meets designed to determine the finalists for the upcoming regional competition.
The primary qualifying event for the Class 5A Division 1 classification occurred on May 8 at Dorman High School. Following this initial round, the remaining classifications proceeded to their qualifying meets on May 9. This structured approach ensured that a comprehensive field of competitors from the Upper State region, including schools in the Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson areas, was evaluated before the final state assembly.
Among the standout performers from the Class 5A Division 1 meet held at Dorman were Jordayn Ratliff and Rebecca Okebe. Ratliff secured victories in both the 100 metres and the long jump, while Okebe claimed the 110 metres hurdles and the 400 metres hurdles. Their performances highlighted the competitive depth within the Dorman High School programme during the qualification phase.
Spartanburg High School also produced significant results, with Akyra Webster dominating the sprint events. Webster was named the champion in the 200 metres and the 400 metres, demonstrating versatility across different distances. Additionally, Riley Vaughn from Spartanburg contributed to the school's success by winning the shot put and discus events, showcasing strength in the field competitions.
The broader qualification picture saw Mauldin High School athletes performing well across multiple disciplines. Competitors from Mauldin secured wins in the 800 metres, 3200 metres, and the 400 metres hurdles. They also claimed victories in the long jump, shot put, and discus, indicating a strong showing for the school across a wide range of track and field events during the May 9 qualifying session.
