Misdemeanour charge follows viral footage of NFL star driving near Levi’s Stadium

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office has issued an arrest warrant for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on a misdemeanor charge of exhibition of speeding. The warrant stems from a YouTube video posted in December, which showed Aiyuk driving a Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing on Tasman Drive near Levi’s Stadium at speeds exceeding the 40 mph limit.

Aiyuk posted an apology on YouTube a few days after the video went viral, stating he would no longer post content involving speeding. The case was investigated by the Santa Clara Police Department and forwarded to the DA’s office on 15 January. The California Post first reported the issuance of the warrant.

This legal development occurs while Aiyuk is sidelined with a knee injury sustained in October 2024. The 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list and voided nearly $27 million in guaranteed contract money in July due to his failure to participate in mandatory rehabilitation. General manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan stated in January that Aiyuk had played his final snaps in San Francisco.

The team has attempted to trade Aiyuk this offseason but has faced little movement. With June 1 having passed, the Niners can now trade or release Aiyuk, with the remaining dead money split over the next two years rather than being charged entirely to 2026. Lynch stated in April that the team was available to trade Aiyuk but was reluctant to release him without compensation.

Amid news of the warrant being issued for his arrest, Aiyuk posted video to Instagram on Wednesday of himself driving a car on a racetrack. The current status of the legal proceedings beyond the issuance of the warrant is not specified, including whether Aiyuk has been located or arrested.
