San Diego Wave claim NWSL summit with victory over Chicago Stars
Goals from Dudinha and Trinity Byars seal 2-0 win, while Gotham FC and North Carolina Courage record victories in concurrent National Women’s Soccer League fixtures.

The San Diego Wave have ascended to the top of the National Women’s Soccer League standings following a decisive 2-0 victory over the Chicago Stars on Sunday. The result, secured before the league’s extended summer break, underscores the Wave’s structural dominance, moving them ahead of their competitors in the league table.
San Diego, who hold a record of eight wins, four losses, and one draw, established their superiority early in the contest. Lia Godfrey provided the assist for Dudinha, who scored in the third minute to give the Wave an immediate one-goal advantage. The early strike set the tone for a match where San Diego maintained defensive rigidity and offensive precision.
The second half saw the Wave’s goalkeeper, Didi Haracic, contribute to the clean sheet with three saves, marking her first such performance of the season. The match also featured a significant substitution for the Stars, with forward Mallory Swanson making her first start since returning from maternity leave before being substituted in the 64th minute.
Chicago’s attempts to equalise were thwarted by both defensive organisation and officiating decisions. In the eighth minute of stoppage time, Jordyn Huitema appeared to score for the Stars, but the goal was disallowed following a video review that ruled the play offside. The Wave ultimately sealed the result when substitute Trinity Byars scored in the final moments of stoppage time.
Defensive integrity was also a key factor in other league fixtures. Gotham FC extended their historic defensive record with an eighth shutout in their first 11 games, defeating the Houston Dash 1-0. Tierna Davidson provided the assist for Jordynn Dudley’s eighth-minute opener, marking Davidson’s first assist in NWSL play. Meanwhile, the North Carolina Courage defeated Angel City FC 2-1, with Manaka Matsukubo contributing a goal and an assist to secure the win.
