Samsung launches Freestyle+ projector at $1,200 with advanced auto-correction features
The new device, priced significantly higher than its predecessor, introduces 3D Auto Keystone and Wall Calibration to handle irregular surfaces, while maintaining 1080p resolution and HDR10+ support.
Samsung has officially released the Freestyle+ projector, marking a premium entry into its portable projection market with a retail price of $1,200. The device is now available through the company’s website and select retailers, positioning itself as a significant upgrade from the second-generation Freestyle model, which previously retailed for $800. This release follows earlier demonstrations of its core technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, where Samsung showcased its approach to correcting image distortion on non-standard surfaces.
The headline innovation in the Freestyle+ is its updated 3D Auto Keystone function, designed to flatten images projected onto irregular surfaces. According to Samsung, the technology effectively corrects distortion when projecting onto corners, curtains with fold marks, or even the side of a tent. The system also automatically adjusts the image size to fit available wall space and detects the distance to the surface for instant focusing, aiming to simplify setup in varied environments.
Complementing the geometric correction is a feature Samsung calls Wall Calibration. This technology detects the colour of the projection surface and adjusts the image’s brightness and colour accordingly. The manufacturer states this ensures clear viewing even on patterned wallpaper or coloured walls, although these performance claims are based on internal testing and initial demonstrations rather than independent long-term verification.
In terms of visual and audio specifications, the projector supports 1080p resolution with HDR10+ and can project images up to 100 inches in size. Audio is handled by a built-in speaker equipped with dual passive woofers to deliver 360-degree sound. Connectivity options include direct projection from Samsung Galaxy devices and AirPlay support for Apple users, alongside access to Samsung TV Plus channels and game streaming via the Samsung Gaming Hub.
While the unit is primarily designed for mains power, it offers flexibility for outdoor use or locations without power outlets by linking to an external USB-C battery. However, specific details regarding battery life duration when operating in this mode have not been disclosed. The release underscores Samsung’s strategy to expand its consumer electronics portfolio with AI-assisted features, despite the notable price increase over previous iterations of the product line.
