I still want Samsung's discontinued Galaxy Z TriFold
Flagship showcase device pulled from market by March 2026 as manufacturer pivots to Fold 8 and Flip 8 portfolios

Samsung has ceased production of the Galaxy Z TriFold, a three-folding smartphone, by March 2026. The device, which launched in South Korea in 2025 and became available in the United States on 30 January 2026, was positioned by the company as a "flagship showcase" rather than a commercial product intended for mass sales. The discontinuation occurred shortly after its global launch, with availability remaining limited in key markets such as the United Kingdom.

The decision to halt production was driven by high manufacturing costs, rising component prices, and significant durability concerns. Early adopters faced substantial repair expenses due to dust ingress and screen damage, with some reports citing repair bills of up to $700. The device launched at a retail price of $2,900 in the US, a figure influenced by increasing RAM prices and broader component cost inflation.

In its place, Samsung has shifted focus to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 portfolios. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a redesigned 7.6-inch main screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio, moving away from the squarer 10:9 ratio found in the Fold 8 Ultra. This design choice aims to better suit productivity tasks and reading, addressing criticisms that previous foldable aspect ratios were technical compromises rather than practical choices.

Software support commitments have also been updated to strengthen the portfolio's market position. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 will receive seven years of operating system updates, running on Android 17 out of the box. This contrasts with competitor Motorola’s three-year update promise for the Razr Ultra, which launched on Android 16. Samsung is also integrating artificial intelligence incentives, offering buyers who purchase directly from the company a six-month trial of Google AI Pro.

The TriFold’s brief market presence highlights the challenges of introducing complex new form factors. While the device’s 10-inch display in a 4:3 ratio offered a tablet-like experience suitable for workflows involving Bluetooth keyboards, the high cost and repair risks limited its viability. With Apple’s first foldable iPhone looming, Samsung’s current strategy relies on the refined hardware and extended software support of the Fold 8 and Flip 8 to maintain competitiveness.
