Warehouse retailer leverages Walmart’s supply chain to offer reduced fees for students, healthcare workers, and military personnel

Sam’s Club, the warehouse retail division owned by Walmart, has launched a targeted promotional campaign for May 2026, offering significant reductions in membership fees for specific demographic groups. The initiative provides up to 60% off new membership costs for college students, healthcare workers, military personnel, and first responders, reflecting the retailer’s strategy to expand its member base through accessible pricing tiers.

Eligibility for the student discount requires applicants to be at least 18 years old, actively enrolled in an accredited institution, and free of an active Sam’s Club membership for the preceding 24 months. Identity verification for this group is conducted digitally via ID.me. Similarly, healthcare workers, including nurses and hospital employees, can secure a Club membership for $20 or a Plus membership for $60. First responders and military members, including veterans and their spouses, are also eligible for discounted rates, with first responders able to join for $20.

Beyond membership acquisition, the retailer is highlighting clearance inventory with discounts of up to 60% on items ranging from electronics to home goods. These reduced prices are applied automatically without the need for specific promo codes, although the availability of these items is described as rotating. This approach aligns with Sam’s Club’s broader business model, which relies on high-volume sales and leveraging Walmart’s extensive supplier network to offer bulk goods in a no-frills environment.

For existing members, the Sam’s Cash Loyalty Rewards Program remains a central feature of the value proposition. Members can earn cash back on qualifying purchases both inside and outside Sam’s Club locations. Rewards earned via the Sam’s Club Mastercard are issued on the card’s monthly cycle date, while those from Plus memberships and bonus offers are credited on the membership anniversary. These funds can be redeemed for purchases, cashed out, or applied toward membership renewals.

Plus members continue to receive enhanced logistical benefits, including free Curbside Pickup and free shipping on eligible orders of $50 or more, restricted to the lower 48 US states. Additionally, holders of the Sam’s Club Mastercard earn 5% back in Sam’s Cash on fuel purchases at any Mastercard-accepted location, capped at the first $6,000 spent annually on gas before the rate drops to 1%.
