Salem Hills claims first 5A state softball title since 2014 in defensive thriller
Head coach Kalab Stokes secures inaugural championship after 11 seasons, guiding team to record 32 wins in a series defined by pitching duels rather than offensive fireworks.

Salem Hills High School has secured its first 5A state softball championship since 2014, defeating Box Elder 3-1 in Game 3 of the championship series on Friday evening. The victory concludes a three-game series characterised by low scoring and intense pitching performances, with the SkyHawks’ defence holding firm to close out the title against the Bees.
The series was described as a battle of inches, with both teams relying heavily on their pitchers to control the game. Box Elder’s Kennadie Blackmer delivered a strong performance throughout, striking out eight batters in the final game and allowing only three runs across the series. Her sole run in Game 3 came from a home run in the fourth inning, but Salem Hills’ defensive execution proved just sufficient to secure the win.
Salem Hills’ head coach Kalab Stokes, who was hired in 2015, claimed his first state title after 11 seasons with the program. The victory marks the culmination of a steady build-up, with the team finishing the season with 32 wins, the highest single-season total in the school’s history. Stokes noted that the programme had been working toward this moment since his arrival, emphasising the collective effort required to reach the championship stage.
The SkyHawks’ offence was sparked early in Game 3 by a first-inning home run from Audree Stokes. The hit came with significant physical cost, as she pulled her hamstring while running the bases. Refusing to leave the game, she received treatment from the athletic trainer between innings to manage the pain. Her determination to remain in the lineup underscored the team’s commitment, with her later reaching base on a walk in the fifth inning.
Offensive support for the 3-1 lead came from Samaya Haveron, who hit a home run in the fifth inning, and Shay Loveridge, who contributed an RBI double. Salem Hills pitcher Jo Norman secured the win, notably striking out batters in a critical sixth-inning situation with the bases loaded to preserve the two-run lead. The victory ends a 12-year drought for Salem Hills in the 5A division, cementing a season defined by resilience and strategic pitching.
