Saints trade linebacker Deion Jones to 49ers for running back Zamir White

The New Orleans Saints have traded veteran linebacker Deion Jones to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for running back Zamir White, a move confirmed by NFL insider Adam Schefter. The player-for-player swap represents a strategic adjustment for New Orleans, who signed Jones just two weeks prior to the trade.

Jones made his debut for the Saints in a preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams, where he recorded a single tackle. Although his time in New Orleans was brief, the veteran brings a substantial career record to the 49ers, including 761 tackles, five forced fumbles, 13 interceptions, and 12 sacks. The trade also reunites Jones with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, who is currently with San Francisco.

The acquisition of White is driven by immediate depth concerns in the Saints' running back corps. The position is currently affected by injuries to Devin Neal and Alvin Kamara, with Kamara expected to miss at least one month. White, a fifth-year player and former Las Vegas Raider, offers a reliable option to compete for a roster spot in a relatively unhealthy backfield.

White was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft and has career totals of 736 rushing yards and 152 receiving yards on 25 receptions. His arrival provides the Saints with additional insurance as they navigate the final stages of the preseason.

The Saints executed a similar player-for-player swap last preseason, trading defensive tackle Khalen Saunders to the Jacksonville Jaguars for centre Luke Fortner.
