Russell leads Hamilton in Monza practice as Mercedes edge Ferrari

George Russell put Mercedes ahead of Ferrari in final practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, recording a fastest lap of 1:22.219.

Lewis Hamilton was second, just over two-tenths behind Russell, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen third and Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli fourth. Mercedes and Ferrari had been closely matched in Friday’s practice sessions, but the final session suggested Russell’s team may hold an advantage heading into qualifying.

Sky Sports reported that Antonelli, the championship leader, is expected to start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid after penalties for taking new engine parts. He remains 59 points ahead of Russell and Hamilton in the standings.

The session ended with Hamilton and Verstappen nearly colliding at the first corner after a dispute over track position. Hamilton moved to avoid contact, while stewards took no further action.

Lando Norris, who has won the past two races, finished fifth and is 83 points behind Antonelli, according to Sky Sports. Qualifying was scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, with the race set for 2pm on Sunday at Ferrari’s home circuit.
