Runway pivots to world models, targeting Google and OpenAI in $5.3 billion valuation
With $860 million in funding and a $5.3 billion valuation, Runway is expanding beyond entertainment tools to compete with tech giants in robotics, drug discovery, and climate modelling.

AI video generation startup Runway is executing a strategic pivot from text-to-video tools to the development of 'world models', systems designed to simulate physical environments and predict behaviour. Valued at $5.3 billion, the company aims to compete directly with major tech incumbents including Google and OpenAI by leveraging observational video data rather than relying solely on language models trained on internet text.
Founded in 2018 by three non-Silicon Valley academics, Runway argues that training on observational data offers a less biased path to artificial intelligence. Co-founder and co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis stated that while language models distil existing human knowledge, the next frontier involves learning how the world works. The company launched its first world model in December 2025 and plans to release another iteration in 2026.
Runway has raised a total of $860 million to date, including a $315 million round in February 2026 from strategic partners AMD Ventures and Nvidia. The company added $40 million in annual recurring revenue in the second quarter of 2026. It currently employs 155 people across offices in New York, London, San Francisco, Seattle, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo.
The startup is applying its technology to sectors beyond entertainment, including robotics, drug discovery, and climate modelling. Germanidis noted that the company’s robotics unit has already achieved real-world testing and deployments. Runway has also signed deals with major media players such as Lionsgate and AMC Networks, with its tools used in films including “Everything Everywhere All At Once”.
The competitive landscape for world models is intensifying. Google is targeting the same territory with its Genie model, while competitors Luma AI and World Labs have raised $900 million and $1.29 billion respectively. OpenAI reportedly shuttered its video platform Sora in March 2026 after incurring significant compute costs with minimal revenue. Runway has compute deals with CoreWeave and Nvidia, though it has not confirmed dedicated cluster access.
