Royals edge Giants 4-3 on Loftin’s squeeze bunt in dramatic ninth

The Kansas City Royals defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Monday night, securing a victory that relied on a decisive ninth-inning play by Nick Loftin. Loftin executed a squeeze bunt with one out to score Josh Rojas, ending a rally that had seen the Giants erase a two-run deficit. The result marks the Royals’ third win in four games since the All-Star break.

Kansas City held a 3-1 lead entering the final frame, built on offensive production in the fourth inning. Salvador Perez hit a two-run home run, and Isaac Collins added an RBI single. The Giants responded in the same inning when Heliot Ramos hit a solo home run, narrowing the gap before the ninth.

The ninth inning began with Josh Rojas leading off with a single. Rojas advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Tolbert and moved to third on a lineout by Carter Jensen. Alex Lange, pitching for the Royals, struck out two batters before Willy Adames hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.

Caleb Kilian entered the game in relief for Kansas City. After Kilian recorded one out and allowed two hits, Loftin delivered the game-winning squeeze bunt. Giants first baseman Bryce Eldridge failed to field the ball cleanly, allowing Rojas to score easily from third base.

Loftin entered the game as a defensive replacement for starting shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who left in the fifth inning with lower back tightness. Loftin had already singled in the seventh inning before delivering the decisive play. Starting pitcher Michael Wacha pitched six innings for the Royals, allowing three hits, striking out five, and walking two. Trevor McDonald started for the Giants but left in the fifth with the trainer, finishing with four hits allowed and three strikeouts.

The Royals will look to extend their recent success when RHP Luinder Avila (4-3, 5.08 ERA) takes the mound on Tuesday. The Giants will counter with RHP Tyler Mahle (2-8, 5.31 ERA), who is scheduled to start for San Francisco.
