Indy 500: Alexander Rossi expected to drive despite scary crash, surgery
Ed Carpenter Racing driver undergoes outpatient procedures for hand and ankle injuries sustained in practice session

Alexander Rossi is expected to compete in the 110th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, 24 May, following two outpatient surgeries for injuries sustained during a practice session on Monday. The Ed Carpenter Racing driver underwent the procedures to address minor injuries to his left hand and right ankle after losing control in Turn 2 and striking the wall.

The incident occurred midway through the turn during Monday’s practice, where Rossi’s car slid into the barrier at substantial speed. He was subsequently struck by Pato O’Ward, who was trailing behind on the track. Romain Grosjean was also involved in the collision, spinning while attempting to avoid the initial impact.

Grosjean described the incident as “not ideal” but expressed gratitude that all drivers involved were okay. Like Rossi, Grosjean was taken to the care centre for assessment. Rossi was then transported for the outpatient procedures on Monday night, with the team confirming the surgeries were successful.

Ed Carpenter Racing stated in a release that Rossi will be monitored with the “full intent of participating in final practice on Friday, 22 May, and the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, 24 May.” The team characterised the injuries as minor, specifically noting damage to a finger on his left hand and his right ankle.

Rossi provided a social media update on Tuesday morning, 19 May, indicating he is recovering and attending a live event. He is set to start second on the grid alongside pole-sitter Alex Palou, with the race scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
