Rogers lauds Bellingham’s tactical adaptability as England midfield selection battle intensifies
Morgan Rogers praises Jude Bellingham’s mentality and role flexibility, noting the pair are competing for places in Thomas Tuchel’s England lineup.

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers has publicly commended England teammate Jude Bellingham’s mentality and tactical versatility ahead of the upcoming summer World Cup. Speaking in an interview for the Lion’s Den podcast, Rogers highlighted Bellingham’s capacity to adapt to various roles at Real Madrid, including transitioning from a goal-scoring forward to an all-round midfielder, and his consistent defensive contributions. The comments come as both players vie for selection in manager Thomas Tuchel’s midfield lineup for the tournament.
Rogers described Bellingham’s adaptability as belonging to the “top one percent, even less, of footballers,” citing examples of Bellingham being tasked with scoring 20 goals in his first season at Real Madrid and later shifting to an all-round midfield role. Rogers noted that this ability to switch functions is a trait that cannot be taught, underscoring the high level of footballing intelligence required to execute such changes effectively.
The Aston Villa midfielder also emphasised Bellingham’s defensive actions, describing them as being of the “highest level” for a midfielder. Despite the direct competition for a starting spot in Tuchel’s squad, Rogers and Bellingham retain a close friendship and have discussed each other’s qualities openly. Rogers insisted that Bellingham possesses world-class variety in his game, allowing him to excel in multiple capacities depending on the team’s needs.
Rogers also praised Bellingham’s mentality, highlighting the 22-year-old’s determination to lead the team even during subpar performances. He observed that even when Bellingham is not at his best or losing possession, he maintains a strong presence, “puffing his chest out” and ensuring he has the “final say nine times out of ten.” Rogers noted that this resilience ensures Bellingham often dictates the outcome of matches, regardless of external criticism.
The USMNT recently opened their World Cup campaign with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles, marking the first World Cup fixture hosted on US soil since 1994. While this event marks a significant moment for the tournament’s hosting history, it remains separate from the narrative surrounding England’s squad preparations. Rogers and Bellingham remain focused on their internal competition for places in Tuchel’s midfield as the summer tournament approaches.
