Rockstar Games calls GTA 6 leaks "heartbreaking" as Netflix premiere looms
The publisher has confirmed the authenticity of leaked gameplay footage just days before an official extended look streams on Netflix, while its parent company investigates the source of the breach.
Rockstar Games has issued a formal statement acknowledging that the recent wave of leaked gameplay videos for Grand Theft Auto 6 are legitimate, describing the situation as "heartbreaking" for the development team. The publisher apologised for the delay in sharing official details with fans and confirmed that the game is nearly finished, with a release date set for 19 November 2026.
The statement, released ahead of an official extended look scheduled to stream on Netflix on 27 August, marked the first public admission that the clips circulating on social media were genuine. Rockstar noted that the leaks may include spoilers and expressed regret that the game was not revealed through official channels after such a long development period.
The leaks, which included more than a dozen clips, featured protagonist Jason engaging in various activities, from shooting hoops at a safe house to cycling along a crowded beach in the game’s version of South Florida. The individual or group responsible for the leaks promoted a memecoin in the footage and claimed to be protesting alleged anti-consumer practices, specifically the decision to release the physical edition of the game as a download code in a box rather than on a disc.
Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has sought information from Microsoft and Discord, which it believes are connected to the source of the leak. Discord marketing director Ryan K. Rigney stated on Monday that the company had not yet been served with a subpoena and would evaluate the validity and scope of the request before responding.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 19 November 2026. The standard edition is priced at $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99. Preloading for the game will begin on 12 November 2026.
The official extended look will initially stream on Netflix on 27 August before hitting YouTube several hours later. Rockstar stated that it took longer than expected to prepare the deep dive but remains determined to exceed fan expectations and deliver the game at the level the community deserves.
