Rivian refreshes 2027 R1 lineup with captain’s chairs and trim realignment
The most requested feature for the R1S returns, but technical specifications remain unchanged from the previous model year.
Rivian has announced updates for its 2027 R1S and R1T models, introducing captain’s chairs for the second row as the most requested feature by customers. The company has restructured its trim levels to align with the recently released R2 SUV, renaming the Dual, Tri, and R1s trims to Premium and Performance, while the Quad trim remains unchanged. Base prices for the R1T and R1S remain unchanged at $79,990 and $83,990 respectively. Technical specifications, including power output and range, remain consistent with previous model years.
Each captain’s chair features stowaway armrests, push-to-release cupholders, heating elements, and full car seat tie-downs. They also fold flat to create a passthrough between the second and third rows, a design choice Rivian theorises will facilitate the transport of long items such as surfboards and skis. The traditional second-row bench remains available for customers preferring to seat seven passengers.
New pricing structures have been introduced for the 2027 model year, reflecting the discontinuation of entry-level Dual Motor Standard Pack options earlier this year. The R1T now starts at $79,990, while the R1S begins at $83,990, both before fees. The R1T Premium trim receives new 20-inch Goodyear Adventure All-Season wheels and tires as standard equipment, with the same set available as a no-cost option on the Performance trim.
Captain’s chairs cost an additional $1,500 on top of the required $2,500 Sound+Vision package, or $4,500 if specified with the Ocean Coast interior. The Ocean Coast interior costs $4,000, and the Slate Sky interior costs $4,500. A new Esker silver paint option has been introduced, replacing the previous LA Silver.
The R1 Premium trims still have the same 329-mile range, with a larger battery as an option that increases range to 410 miles for the R1S and 420 miles for the R1T. Power is still 533 hp, upgradable to 655 hp. The Performance R1s feature Rivian’s tri-motor powertrain, still with 850 hp and a range of 371 miles. The R1 Quads keep their name together with the same powertrain specs.
