Rivian R2 Outpaces Tesla Model Y in EPA Range Ahead of US Launch
Final Environmental Protection Agency data reveals the R2 Performance variant achieves a 330-mile range, surpassing the 2026 Tesla Model Y despite a heavier build and less aerodynamic profile.

Rivian has confirmed that it will commence order invitations, demo drives, and the first deliveries of its R2 electric SUV in the United States on June 9. The launch timeline aligns with the publication of final efficiency ratings by the US Environmental Protection Agency, which provide the first comprehensive look at the vehicle’s performance capabilities ahead of its market entry.
According to data recorded on the US Department of Energy’s Fuel Economy website, the R2 Performance all-wheel-drive variant equipped with 21-inch wheels achieves an EPA range of 330 miles. This figure exceeds the 306-mile range of the 2026 Tesla Model Y AWD, a direct competitor in the electric SUV segment. Both vehicles share an identical combined MPGe of 105, a metric created by the EPA to measure the efficiency of electric vehicles.
The performance differential is notable given the physical characteristics of the vehicles. The R2 Performance is approximately 800 lbs heavier than the Model Y and features a taller, less aerodynamic design. Despite these disadvantages in weight and drag, the Rivian model maintains a longer range and demonstrates greater efficiency in city driving conditions compared to highway performance.
Customers opting for the R2 with 20-inch all-terrain wheels will see a reduction in range, with EPA ratings showing 307 miles and a combined MPGe of 99. While the 21-inch wheel variant leads in range, the all-terrain option still offers competitive efficiency metrics relative to the broader market.
Rivian has outlined specific delivery protocols for its reservation holders. Current R1 owners with existing reservations will receive accelerated delivery timing. Additionally, the company plans to include a randomly selected group of reservation holders in the early delivery batches. For new customers who place orders after receiving an invitation, the company estimates a wait time of two to six weeks for delivery.
