Rivian deploys AI voice assistant across existing fleet ahead of R2 launch
The system, built on Rivian Unified Intelligence, supports natural language commands and driver-specific privacy settings but is currently limited to English.
Rivian has deployed an AI-powered in-vehicle voice assistant via a software update, marking a significant step in the electric vehicle maker's strategy to integrate autonomous capabilities. The feature, named Rivian Assistant, is now accessible to owners of Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles holding an active Connect+ cellular subscription or participating in an active trial. The automaker states the technology will also be included in the upcoming R2 mid-size electric SUV upon its launch.
Built on the Rivian Unified Intelligence foundation, the system allows drivers to control hardware functions directly, a capability distinct from phone-mirrored assistants. Users can adjust settings such as drive modes, ride height, and climate control, as well as manage media and open the front trunk. The assistant supports natural language commands, enabling drivers to issue complex requests without memorising specific codes, such as heating passenger seats while keeping the driver's seat cool.
Beyond vehicle control, the assistant handles text management, summarises local news and weather, and provides troubleshooting instructions. Its first third-party integration is with Google Calendar, allowing users to check and manage appointments without accessing the app directly. This multi-modal approach means the system understands the vehicle's products and operations as one continuous system, learning from users to deliver a personalised driving experience.
Privacy is managed through specific driver profiles, ensuring that personal context is stored locally for each user. This design prevents cross-contamination of data between multiple users in the same household. To summon the assistant, drivers can simply say "Hey, Rivian" or press the left steering wheel button. The system currently operates exclusively in English and will only respond to commands and questions in that language.
The feature was first announced at Rivian's inaugural Autonomy and AI day in December 2025, where the company highlighted its ability to orchestrate different models to choose the best one for any given task. Availability for the upcoming R2 is expected to align with production timelines, with first deliveries of the most expensive variant anticipated later this spring. The $45,000 base model of the R2 is scheduled for launch in 2027 with the assistant included.
This rollout underscores Rivian's focus on creating a seamless, intelligent ecosystem within its vehicles. By leveraging the Rivian Unified Intelligence platform, the company aims to move beyond simple connectivity towards a more responsive and context-aware driving companion that enhances safety and convenience for its customers.
