Enrique Riquelme Calls For Florentino Pérez Debate As Presidential Campaign Intensifies
Challenger argues two decades of uncontested leadership requires public accountability ahead of June vote

Real Madrid presidential challenger Enrique Riquelme has intensified his campaign by publicly calling for a debate with incumbent president Florentino Pérez. The request comes as the club’s Electoral Board prepares for the anticipated June 7 election, a date that remains unconfirmed but is currently the focal point of the contest. Riquelme’s campaign is operating at full speed, with the businessman prioritising direct engagement with the club’s membership base to address grievances regarding governance and accessibility.

During a recent meeting at El Rincón de Toñín, a venue associated with the Capote y Montera supporters’ club, Riquelme listened to concerns from fans and outlined key themes of his platform. Discussions centred on the ongoing Santiago Bernabéu renovation, the treatment of socios, and the transparency of the ticket purchasing system. Riquelme argued that while the club has achieved significant commercial success, ordinary members feel increasingly disconnected from the hierarchy.

He specifically highlighted issues surrounding season ticket accessibility and redistribution. Riquelme questioned the lack of clarity regarding tickets that become available after holders are removed for resale violations, suggesting these should be offered to waiting socios rather than remaining within a closed system. He stated that season ticket holders are privileged, but regular members feel forgotten, urging a review of how the club manages its membership relations.

The demand for a debate follows a recent challenge from Pérez, who asked potential opponents to publicly detail their contributions to the club. Riquelme responded by insisting that a public forum is necessary after two decades without a contested election. He acknowledged Pérez’s legacy, stating that the current president has been the best in Real Madrid history, but argued that a debate is essential to discuss how to build on that legacy and take the club into the future.

Riquelme also claimed that Pérez did not anticipate a challenger emerging, noting the rapid assembly of his own campaign once elections were announced. Throughout the event, he accepted a document containing requests and concerns from a group of members, promising to review the proposals and incorporate them into future campaign announcements. The meeting concluded with Riquelme posing for photos with fans, reinforcing his message of restoring communication between the club and its membership.
