Richards’ ankle injury unlikely to derail USMNT World Cup plans
Sources indicate ligament damage sustained against Brentford is not severe enough to prevent participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though availability for the Europa Conference League final remains uncertain.

United States Men’s National Team defender Chris Richards has sustained torn ankle ligaments that rule him out of Crystal Palace’s final Premier League match against Arsenal. Despite the injury occurring during the club’s recent draw against Brentford, sources indicate the damage is not serious enough to hinder his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Richards is expected to be fit for the USMNT’s group stage opener on June 12.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed that Richards has torn two ligaments in his ankle, with the joint remaining swollen four days after the injury. Glasner described the defender’s status for the Europa Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano as a “50-50” chance, noting that while the injury is stable, the swelling requires intensive treatment. Richards is confident that, barring a setback, the injury will not affect his involvement in the global tournament.
Richards, who has appeared in 49 games this season, is viewed as a key leader among the USMNT defenders under manager Mauricio Pochettino. His absence from the final league match and potential absence from the European final means he may not have played since May 17 if he misses the Conference League final. This lack of match fitness could be a concern given the tight timeline before the World Cup, especially if he joins the national team camp without full sharpness.
The USMNT faces upcoming friendlies against Senegal and Germany, which will serve as critical fitness tests for Richards. If he is unavailable for Palace, Pochettino must navigate defensive depth concerns, particularly with 38-year-old Tim Ream, who is a likely starter and potential captain. Ream’s age and recent injury history with Charlotte FC highlight the pressure on the defensive unit, with Richards and Ream identified as the primary stalwarts under Pochettino’s system.
Alternative options include Mark McKenzie, Auston Trusty, or Miles Robinson, though the latter has limited starting experience. Additionally, 19-year-old dual-national Noahkai Banks, who was not named to the Germany squad, remains eligible for the USMNT. His inclusion could provide additional defensive depth, leveraging his Bundesliga experience with Augsburg to support the squad as Pochettino prepares to name his final roster on May 26.
