Richards’ ankle injury casts uncertainty over Palace’s Conference League final and USMNT World Cup plans
The 26-year-old centre-back requires further assessment following a collision in west London, with his availability for the May 27 final and the June 13 World Cup opener against Paraguay now in question.

Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards sustained an ankle injury during the club’s 2-2 draw with Brentford at the G Tech Community Stadium, raising immediate concerns regarding his availability for both club and international duty. The incident occurred in the 77th minute following a collision with Igor Thiago, requiring Richards to receive treatment on the pitch before he was able to complete the match.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed the nature of the injury, describing it as a blow to the ankle that twisted and resulted in significant swelling. While Richards was carried off the field without his left boot at the final whistle, Glasner indicated that the absence might only last a matter of days, suggesting a potential return for midweek fixtures. The manager noted he was more concerned about Richards’ condition than that of fellow centre-back Chadhi Riad, who also suffered an injury in the same match.
The timing of the injury presents a logistical challenge for Palace, who are preparing for the UEFA Europa Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig on May 27. Glasner indicated that Richards’ participation in the final depends on his recovery timeline, with his involvement in the final league match against Arsenal next Sunday likely to be limited or non-existent to manage fitness ahead of the European final.
For the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), the injury introduces a variable ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Richards, 26, has been considered a lock for USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup for the tournament opener against Paraguay on June 13. Glasner’s assessment that the injury may only rule Richards out for a few days supports the expectation that he will remain a key player for the USMNT.
Richards has been a staple for Palace this season, making 49 competitive appearances and logging 4,131 minutes, placing him in the top 30 for minutes played across Europe’s top five leagues. If he recovers successfully, he is expected to join the already convened USMNT squad after the Conference League final. The final will be broadcast live on Paramount+.
