Richard Hughes steps down as Liverpool sporting director
Liverpool has confirmed Richard Hughes’ departure, with the sporting director expected to join Saudi club Al Hilal.
Richard Hughes has stepped down as Liverpool sporting director and is set to join Saudi club Al Hilal, ending a tenure that began in June 2024.
Liverpool confirmed Hughes’ departure but did not state a reason for the decision. His contract had been due to expire in June 2027, while the timing and nature of his expected role at Al Hilal have not been disclosed.
Hughes joined Liverpool from Bournemouth, where he held a similar position. At Anfield, he was responsible for football operations and recruitment and provided support to the coaching staff.
He was also involved in the appointment of Arne Slot as Liverpool manager. Liverpool said Hughes joined at the beginning of a period of change and described his contribution to the club’s football operations as significant.
In a statement released by Liverpool, Hughes said he would continue to follow and support the club with “great affection” and wished everyone involved success for the season ahead.
