Reddit expands comment functionality with video uploads in public subreddits
The social network now permits users to post video clips directly within comment threads, marking a significant shift in how community members can engage with content and each other.

Reddit has introduced a new feature allowing users to post videos directly within comment threads, expanding the platform’s multimedia capabilities beyond the previously supported text, images, and GIFs. The update is currently restricted to public, safe-for-work subreddits that have explicitly enabled the function, ensuring that community moderators retain control over the feature’s adoption within their specific spaces.
To maintain platform safety, all video comments are processed through Reddit’s existing safety infrastructure before being displayed to other users. The company has confirmed that these videos will not autoplay and will adhere to individual user audio settings, allowing members to manage their viewing experience without unexpected sound playback.
Users can access the new tool via a video icon located within the comment box interface. This interface provides the option to either record a new clip directly through the application or upload an existing video file sourced from elsewhere on the internet. The functionality appears to be accessible across devices, with instructions indicating users can click or tap to initiate the process.
The introduction of video comments is likely to impact high-engagement formats such as Ask Me Anything (AMA) discussions. Historically, participants in these threads, often celebrities or public figures, have recorded single videos to respond to multiple user questions. This new feature allows subjects to respond more quickly and directly to questions while remaining actively involved in the conversation as it unfolds, rather than typing out individual text responses.
This development follows Reddit’s earlier integration of images and GIFs in comments, establishing a precedent for richer media engagement within threads. By allowing users to share thoughts via video, the platform offers a different medium for expression, potentially altering the dynamic of community discussions and content sharing across its network.
