Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story reportedly going to IL with groin injury he's struggled with for weeks
Team recalls Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester to fill roster vacancy

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly moving shortstop Trevor Story to the injured list due to a groin injury that has persisted for several weeks. The 33-year-old veteran has not yet been officially announced for the move, but the decision follows a period of close monitoring by the coaching staff. Interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed that the team arrived at the facility at 3:30 am on Friday to assess Story’s condition before deciding to give him the day off.

Story’s 2026 season has been marked by significant offensive and defensive struggles. He is currently batting .206 with a .547 OPS, recording three home runs and 19 RBI in 176 plate appearances. Defensively, he has committed six errors, which leads all American League shortstops. Advanced metrics further highlight his difficulties, crediting Story with -1 Defensive Runs Saved and -2 Outs Above Average.

The injury has already impacted the team’s recent lineup. Story sat out Friday’s 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Atlanta Braves, with Andruw Monasterio filling in at shortstop. Monasterio, who has played the position in the three games Story has missed over the past three weeks, is batting .258/.310/.424 with eight doubles, one home run, and nine RBI in 71 plate appearances this season.

To fill the roster spot, the Red Sox have called up utility infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester. The 28-year-old Sogard is entering his third major-league stint with Boston. In Triple-A, he has slashed .269/.417/.454 with nine doubles, five home runs, 23 RBI, and four stolen bases. The team has not provided a projected timetable for Story’s return.

Story joins outfielder Roman Anthony, who is dealing with a right wrist sprain, and starting pitcher Garrett Crochet, who has left shoulder inflammation, on the injured list. These absences have contributed to the Red Sox’s struggles, leaving them with an 18-26 record. They currently sit in last place in the AL East, 11.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays and three games out of the third wild-card spot.

If Story’s absence extends, Boston could consider moving Marcelo Mayer from second base to his natural shortstop position. Mayer played shortstop throughout his amateur and minor-league career. Story, an 11-year veteran, has compiled a .242/.295/.407 slash average with 49 home runs and 205 RBI in five seasons with Boston.
