Payton Tolle delivered a standout performance on the mound, pitching six innings and striking out a career-high 14 batters. Tolle, who improved his record to 7-6, was perfect through the first four innings before allowing one run on two hits. His 14 strikeouts make him the first Red Sox pitcher to achieve that mark since Chris Sale on 8 May 2019.
The offensive onslaught was sparked early by Jarren Duran, who hit a two-run home run over the Green Monster to open the scoring. This initiated a five-run second inning that included an RBI double from Jake Rogers and a two-run double from Wilyer Abreu. Abreu’s 380-foot double to right field was highlighted by Statcast data, which noted the hit would have been a home run in every Major League Baseball ballpark except Fenway Park.
Additional run support came from Andruw Monasterio, Masataka Yoshida, and Caleb Durbin, whose hits helped push the score into double digits. Yoshida and Durbin each added a run in subsequent innings, securing double-digit scoring for the second consecutive game. The Athletics’ pitching struggled significantly, with Jack Perkins giving up five runs on five hits in just three innings while striking out three and walking three.
The Red Sox’s no-hit bid ended in the fifth inning when Tyler Soderstrom hit a leadoff home run. Looking ahead, the series continues with the Athletics starting left-handed pitcher Gage Jump, who holds a 4-7 record and a 4.59 ERA. He will face Red Sox left-hander Jake Bennett, who enters with a 7-4 record and a 2.90 ERA in the middle game of the series.
