Real Madrid secures Perez mandate through 2030 with Mourinho return and aggressive transfer strategy
Florentino Perez’s re-election cements his leadership until 2030, while former manager Jose Mourinho is set to return as head coach amid a reported $171 million bid for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise.

Spanish businessman Florentino Perez has secured a fourth term as Real Madrid president, defeating rival candidate Enrique Riquelme in club elections held over the weekend. Perez, who has led the Spanish giants since 2000 with a brief hiatus between 2006 and 2009, will remain in charge until 2030. The election, conducted by the club’s members known as socios, confirms Perez’s continued institutional control over one of Europe’s most prominent football organisations.
In a significant shift in sporting direction, Perez announced that former manager Jose Mourinho will return to the club as head coach. Mourinho, who coached Benfica in the past season and actively campaigned for Perez during the election, is expected to be officially confirmed in the coming hours. This appointment marks a strategic realignment for the club, moving away from the previous managerial structure to restore a partnership that has historically yielded success.
The incoming presidency has also been accompanied by a detailed outline of transfer strategies for the upcoming summer window, distinguishing Perez’s approach from that of his defeated rival. Perez indicated that the club’s first two signings would be former Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, who will join as a free agent following the conclusion of his contract, and Inter Milan winger Denzel Dumfries. The club intends to trigger Dumfries’s release clause, valued at $20 million, to secure his services.
Beyond these initial targets, Perez signalled a more ambitious financial commitment to squad reinforcement, suggesting the club would enter talks to sign a world-class player. According to multiple reports, Real Madrid intends to submit a bid of $171 million for Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise. This proposed expenditure underscores the president’s intent to maintain competitive parity in the European market through high-value acquisitions.
The election results also highlighted the contrasting visions presented by the candidates, particularly regarding high-profile personnel. Riquelme had previously suggested initiating talks with manager Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. Both individuals have denied any contact regarding such moves, with Manchester City indicating it would pursue legal action against the former candidate concerning the speculation around Haaland. Perez’s victory effectively terminates these alternative proposals, consolidating the club’s direction under the new mandate.
