Real Madrid election campaign intensifies as candidates pledge high-profile signings
While the Spanish national team prepares for a World Cup qualifier against Iraq, the internal politics of Real Madrid have reached a fever pitch, with presidential contenders outlining starkly different visions for the club’s future.

Real Madrid has entered the decisive phase of its presidential election campaign, marked by a series of high-stakes announcements from candidates Florentino Pérez and Enrique Riquelme. The contest has shifted from standard policy debates to a war of headline-making commitments, with both contenders leveraging major transfer targets to sway the membership base.
In an exclusive interview with the newspaper AS, incumbent president Florentino Pérez confirmed that defender Ibrahima Konaté and manager José Mourinho would join the club if he is re-elected. Pérez framed these appointments as essential for ensuring defensive solidity and strong leadership for his next sporting project. To reinforce the announcement, Pérez released a social media video in which Mourinho confirmed his potential return with a brief “yes”.
Rival candidate Enrique Riquelme responded by appearing on the television show El Hormiguero, where he announced that Erling Haaland and Rodri Hernández would wear the club’s white kit if elected. Riquelme went further by making a financial pledge to the membership, promising to pay club members’ fees out of his own pocket if he fails to deliver on these specific signing targets.
The institutional drama at the Santiago Bernabéu coincides with critical preparations for the Spanish national team. Luis de la Fuente’s side is set to face Iraq at Riazor Stadium at 21:00 in a World Cup preparation match. The squad will be without key players Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Zubimendi, providing an opportunity for supporting cast members to establish themselves before the tournament.
In separate sporting developments, Lionel Messi has been unanimously awarded the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. The Argentine star, recognised as a global sporting icon, has confirmed he will travel to Oviedo next October to receive the honour, adding a note of international prestige to a day dominated by domestic political manoeuvring.
