Razorbacks media session highlights Hill’s deep throw amid 100-degree heat
Quarterback AJ Hill and wide receiver Courtney Crutchfield delivered the longest play of the session as temperatures soared in Fayetteville.
The Arkansas Razorbacks returned to the practice fields outside the Walker Pavilion for their seventh session of fall camp on a sweltering 100-degree day in Fayetteville. The media viewing session, which lasted a full hour, marked a shift in protocol under head coach Ryan Silverfield, as it was the first time in his tenure that journalists were permitted to observe a 7-on-7 drill.
The most significant moment of the event occurred during an 11-on-11 period where the second-team offense began at the two-yard line. Quarterback AJ Hill utilised a hard count to draw the defence offsides, resulting in a free play. He launched a pass down the right sideline that was caught in stride by wide receiver Courtney Crutchfield. Crutchfield used a stiff arm to separate from defender Braydon Lee and ran for an 88-yard touchdown, marking the longest play of the practice.
Jackson, leading the first-team offense, provided a contrast in performance. He completed passes to Chris Marshall, including a six-yard gain and a 33-yard strike to restart a series, but the unit struggled to capitalise on scoring opportunities. In a simulated one-minute drill scenario, the first-team offense moved into field-goal range, but kicker Max Gilbert missed a 48-yard attempt into the wind.
Defensive efforts were highlighted by freshman Brandon Ford, who recorded two pass breakups while covering Antonio Jordan. Steven Soles Jr. continued to generate pressure, recording a sack during the one-minute drill and consistently disrupting the backfield. Quincy Rhodes also made an impact, recording a tackle for loss on a fourth-and-five play against running back Braylen Russell.
The 7-on-7 drill portion of the session offered further insight into the quarterback competition. Jackson completed four of eight passes, though all were checkdowns and two throws to Marshall were broken up by Joker Johnson. Hill was more efficient in the short passing game, completing four of seven attempts, including short touchdowns to CJ Brown and Ismael Cisse.
