Shane McClanahan’s scoreless streak reaches 21.2 innings as Tampa Bay holds off Toronto rally

The Tampa Bay Rays maintained their superior standing within the American League with a 7-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in a 10-inning contest at Rogers Centre on Tuesday evening. The win extends the Rays’ record against AL opponents to 19-3, reinforcing their position as the leading team in the junior circuit.

Shane McClanahan provided the foundation for the victory, pitching five scoreless innings. McClanahan allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out seven batters, extending his career-long scoreless innings streak to 21.2. His performance also lowered his season ERA to 2.27, with a 97 mph fastball serving as the final pitch of his outing.

Tampa Bay established early control, jumping on Blue Jays starter Patrick Corbin. The Rays built a 5-0 lead through a series of offensive plays, including RBI hits from Jonny DeLuca and Cedric Mullins, a wild pitch that scored Taylor Walls, and a solo home run by Ryan Vilade off Jeff Hoffman in the seventh inning.

Toronto mounted a significant comeback in the bottom of the seventh, batting around to tie the game at 5-5. The Rays’ bullpen managed to hold the line through the ninth inning, sending the contest into extra innings where the outcome remained undecided.

In the 10th inning, Cedric Mullins served as the ghost runner. Taylor Walls drove him in with a single, and Jonathan Aranda added a sacrifice fly to put the Rays ahead 6-5. Garrett Cleavinger entered in the bottom of the 10th to close the game. Although Toronto scored one more run, the final out was recorded when Andres Gimenez grounded out to Junior Caminero, ending the game 7-5.

Caminero committed two errors during the match, but his defensive play in the 10th proved decisive. The Rays and Blue Jays are scheduled to continue their series on Wednesday at Rogers Centre, marking the final game of a 13-game homestand for Toronto.
