Rangers clinch series with dramatic ninth-inning rally against Diamondbacks
Despite a shaky pitching performance and a 4% win probability entering the final frame, the Texas Rangers overcame a 5-4 deficit to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks and take the series.
The Texas Rangers secured a 6-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in a Major League Baseball contest that has already been dubbed "The Jake Burger Game" by observers. The win clinches the series for Texas, sending the club into an off day with momentum restored after a tense finish at the Globe Life Field, locally known as "the Shed."
Jake Burger provided the decisive offensive spark in the fifth inning, hitting a home run off Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson to extend the Rangers' lead to 3-0. Nelson had pitched effectively through four innings, allowing only one baserunner via a soft single from Evan Carter. Burger’s opposite-field blast shifted the game’s trajectory, placing Kumar Rocker in line for the win despite a labourious outing.
Rocker’s performance was statistically uncharacteristic for a dominant start. He pitched five scoreless innings but required 97 pitches to do so, walking four batters and striking out only three while allowing just three hits. His sinker averaged 94.7 mph, peaking at 96.5 mph, yet he struggled to generate swings and misses. The Rangers’ offense was largely stifled for the remainder of the game, retiring 11 of 12 batters after Burger’s homer, with Josh Jung providing the sole exception via a double.
The Diamondbacks mounted a comeback to take a 5-4 lead, capitalising on runs scored in the sixth and seventh innings off relievers Cole Winn and others. Arizona’s manager Torey Lovullo replaced closer Paul Sewald with Juan Morillo in the ninth inning, but the move did not prevent the Rangers from mounting a comeback. The final inning proved decisive for Texas. Ezequiel Duran doubled to score Jung, and Jake Burger singled to drive in Duran and tie the game. The Rangers finished the game with 8 hits, half of which occurred in the ninth inning, and were 3 for 4 with runners in scoring position. In contrast, Arizona left 13 of their 19 baserunners on base, highlighting a significant inefficiency in high-leverage situations that ultimately cost them the series.
