Rangers capitalise on Astros collapse in tight AL West race
With the Athletics leading at 22-21, the Rangers sit just one game back, buoyed by strong pitching despite offensive inconsistencies.

The Texas Rangers have seized a distinct opportunity to compete for the American League West title following a significant slump by the Houston Astros. Six weeks into the 2026 Major League Baseball season, the division remains tightly contested, with no single team holding firm control. The Oakland Athletics currently lead the standings at 22-21, followed closely by the Seattle Mariners at 22-23 and the Rangers at 21-22.
The most dramatic shift in the division has been the performance of the Houston Astros, who have fallen to last place with a 17-28 record. Sitting five games behind third-place Texas, the Astros have endured a difficult stretch, including recent losses to the Seattle Mariners with scores of 10-2 on May 13 and 8-3 on May 15. This 1-2 record in their home series against Seattle has widened the gap between Houston and the contenders.
Texas has remained competitive despite an uneven start characterised by offensive inconsistency. The Rangers have been bolstered by strong pitching, with ace Jacob deGrom providing stability every fifth day and the bullpen delivering consistently strong performances. However, the lineup has faced challenges, with Corey Seager experiencing a prolonged slump that highlights broader issues in the team’s offensive output.
The Los Angeles Angels, also struggling at 16-28, effectively narrow the title race to three teams: Oakland, Seattle, and Texas. With the bottom of the division occupied by two of baseball’s weaker teams, the path to the division crown requires navigating the top three. The Rangers face a critical test this weekend, beginning a three-game series against the Astros on May 16.
Looking ahead, Texas has a favourable schedule that could help build momentum. Following the series in Houston, the Rangers travel to face the Colorado Rockies, who hold a 17-27 record. Back-to-back series against struggling clubs offers the Rangers a genuine chance to improve their standing and position themselves for a stronger push as the season progresses.
