Rams’ Simpson answers draft skepticism with efficient preseason debut

Los Angeles Rams first-round draft pick Ty Simpson has begun to silence early doubts surrounding his selection, delivering a highly efficient performance in the team’s preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. Simpson, chosen 13th overall in April, completed 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in a 20-12 victory.
The former Alabama quarterback responded to pre-draft scrutiny by taking control of the game in the second half. After a tight 6-6 tie at the interval, Simpson orchestrated two consecutive touchdown drives, both resulting in passes to rookie running back Dean Connors. His first score came on a four-play drive, followed by an eight-play sequence that secured the win for the Rams.
Simpson’s opportunity to showcase his abilities came after spending the majority of training camp behind second-string quarterback Stetson Bennett. The debut provides a platform for the rookie to demonstrate his skillset while learning from veteran Matthew Stafford, who is in his 17th NFL season and fifth with the Rams.
The Rams have positioned themselves as heavy Super Bowl favourites following a significant offseason overhaul. Key additions include Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns and Pro Bowl cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Chiefs. Offensively, the squad retains star wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.
Simpson arrives in the NFL following a prolific 2025 season at Alabama, where he recorded 3,948 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He also led the Crimson Tide to their first-ever College Football Playoff and SEC title game appearances under head coach Kalen DeBoer.
The Rams will commence their 2026 regular season campaign in Australia, facing NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, 10 September. While Simpson may need to wait his turn to become the primary offensive leader, his preseason showing marks a promising beginning for the franchise’s new era.
