Matthew Stafford signs extension with Rams: Reigning MVP adds one year to deal, which runs through 2027
Reigning MVP’s new deal positions him among league’s highest earners while providing stability for successor Ty Simpson

The Los Angeles Rams have finalised a one-year contract extension with quarterback Matthew Stafford, securing his tenure with the franchise through the 2027 season. The agreement, announced by the club, brings the total value of his two-year contract to up to $105 million, comprising a base structure and up to $60 million in performance-based incentives.

Stafford, who turned 38 in February, secured the extension following a dominant 2024 season where he led the NFL in both passing touchdowns and yards. His 46 touchdown passes set a new Rams franchise record and marked a career high, while his 4,707 passing yards also topped the league. At 37, he became the oldest quarterback to win the NFL Most Valuable Player award for the first time.

Under the terms of the existing contract structure, Stafford is set to earn $40 million fully guaranteed in 2026. If he meets all incentive thresholds, he will average $52.5 million per year over the life of the deal. According to salary cap analysts at Over The Cap, this would tie him with Justin Herbert as the eighth-highest-paid quarterback in the league.

The extension provides a critical development window for Ty Simpson, the Rams’ 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. By keeping an MVP-caliber veteran in the roster for two more seasons, the organisation ensures Simpson can learn behind Stafford before potentially assuming starting duties. This strategy, however, has drawn scrutiny regarding the use of high draft capital on a quarterback who is not immediately ready to take over.

Stafford’s presence through 2027 allows Los Angeles to maximise its current competitive window. The former No. 1 overall pick previously led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in the 2021 season. With minimal signs of regression in his late thirties, the extension ensures the franchise has two more opportunities to contend for a second championship in recent years.
