Rams reshape roster and salary cap around Stafford’s 2026 return
Los Angeles has made a series of high-cost moves after Matthew Stafford committed to an 18th season, creating a heavily concentrated roster with limited projected cap room.

The Los Angeles Rams have reorganised their 2026 roster around quarterback Matthew Stafford after he decided to return for an 18th season following a 31–27 NFC Championship Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
According to CBS Sports, Stafford agreed to a one-year extension worth US$55 million, with incentives capable of lifting its value to US$60 million. The Rams also retained safety Kam Curl, acquired cornerback Trent McDuffie and edge rusher Myles Garrett, signed cornerback Jaylen Watson and brought defensive tackle Aaron Donald out of retirement.
The moves address key areas of the roster but have left Los Angeles with a top-heavy salary-cap structure. The NFL’s 2026 cap is reported at US$301.2 million, while the Rams’ adjusted cap is US$313.324 million. NFL Players Association calculations project the team to be about US$1.715 million over the cap once offseason accounting ends.
Garrett’s contract was reworked after the trade, reducing his 2026 cap number to US$8.84 million. Donald agreed to a one-year deal worth US$20 million, with a maximum value of US$30 million through incentives, and carries a reported 2026 cap number of US$5.826 million.
Stafford has the league’s largest 2026 cap number at US$48.267 million. CBS Sports reported that restructuring his contract could create up to US$11.76 million in cap room, although that would increase his 2027 cap number. Wide receiver Davante Adams is another potential restructure candidate, but such a move would create additional future dead money.
SportsLine lists the Rams as Super Bowl LXI favourites at 5-to-1 odds. That assessment reflects a projection rather than a confirmed outcome, while the team’s ability to sustain the push will depend on future contract decisions, including those involving its 2023 draft class and Stafford’s longer-term deal.
