Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed on July 25 that former defensive tackle Aaron Donald has not ruled out a return to the NFL, stating the player is currently undergoing a strict training regimen to assess his physical readiness. The announcement comes as the team begins training camp, with the franchise leaving the door open for Donald to reconsider his retirement.
Donald retired in 2024 as the franchise’s all-time sacks leader and a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. McVay described the former player’s current process as "very diligent" and "strict," noting that the regimen is similar to the one he followed while actively playing to determine how his body responds.
"We'll see when we have more information whether or not we're gonna give it a go or whether or not he's gonna continue to enjoy what he's been doing for the last couple years," McVay said. "But if that is something that he wants to do, we're gonna be able to try to make that happen."
The speculation regarding Donald’s potential return intensified following the Rams' acquisition of defensive end Myles Garrett in a blockbuster trade in June. Analysts suggest that Garrett’s presence on the edge may alter the defensive attention Donald previously faced, as opponents would need to account for the new acquisition, potentially reducing the double-teams Donald was routinely subjected to during his career.
McVay expressed high confidence in Donald’s potential impact should he return. "If Aaron Donald decides that he wants to be a part of it, I do think that he’s gonna impact and influence positive change," McVay said. "I don’t think. I know he would."
The Rams have not provided a timetable for a final decision from the 35-year-old, who is two years removed from football. While league confidence remains high regarding his ability to perform at an impact level, the outcome of his physical assessment and subsequent decision remains uncertain.
