Raiders’ Quarterback Transition Under Scrutiny as Mendoza Makes Debut

However, head coach Klint Kubiak removed Cousins from the contest in the first quarter, handing the reins to Mendoza. His first drive stalled after a third-and-eight completion to wide receiver Jack Bech was followed by a holding penalty on a backup offensive lineman. However, his second drive showcased the arm strength and mobility that made him a top prospect. After a 19-yard gain to Malik Benson and a 53-yard run by rookie running back Mike Washington, Mendoza navigated a first-and-goal situation by avoiding a sack to set up a third-and-goal at the six-yard line. He capped the drive with a quick slant touchdown pass to Bech, the highlight of his preseason appearance.
The game also featured the debut of Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, the third overall pick in the 2026 draft. While Mendoza’s touchdown drive was the only time the Raiders scored while he was on the field, the team did reach field goal range in his final drive.
