Mayor Tom Koch’s administration steps in to provide public access to tournament matches amid soaring stadium ticket prices

The City of Quincy, under the direction of Mayor Tom Koch, has announced plans to host free FIFA World Cup watch parties at Kilroy Square on Friday, 19 June, and Saturday, 20 June. The initiative is designed to provide residents with access to tournament matches, including the contest between Team USA and Australia, without the financial burden of stadium admission.

Ticket prices for FIFA World Cup matches at Boston Stadium, formerly Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, have reached approximately $1,000 per seat. In response to these costs, the city has utilised Kilroy Square, located at 25 Cottage Ave, to create a public viewing space. The square, which was dedicated in 2021 to honour the city’s shipbuilding heritage and Fore River Shipyard inspector James J. Kilroy, regularly hosts public gatherings such as farmers markets and beer gardens.

The Friday event begins at 2 p.m., preceding the 3 p.m. kickoff of the United States versus Australia match in Seattle. The screening will continue to cover the 6 p.m. match between Scotland and Morocco in Foxboro, concluding only after the final whistle. Local vendors Evviva Trattoria, The Fours, and Espresso East Coffee & Co. will be present to provide food and beverage options for attendees.

On Saturday, 20 June, the festivities commence earlier at noon. The schedule includes the Netherlands versus Sweden match in Houston, followed by the Germany versus Ivory Coast fixture in Toronto at 4 p.m. The party will run until the conclusion of the second match. The square has previously hosted an Arts and Artisans Market on 13 June and serves as a hub for summer music events and holiday markets.

Parking is available at the Kilroy Square Garage, with rates set at $1 per hour for the first six hours on weekdays and $1 per hour for the first 12 hours on weekends. The 2026 FIFA World Cup began on 11 June, with Mexico defeating South Africa 2-0 and South Korea beating Czechia 2-1. Team USA’s first group stage match was played on 12 June against Paraguay in Los Angeles.
